For anyone who wants to get into moped riding, you want to understand the rules of the road. At Direct Bikes¸ we care deeply about rider safety. That is why we ask that if you do wish to get into moped riding, you learn the rules of the road. Here are some of the most important moped laws UK riders need to get to grips with. Understand and adhere to these laws, and you are much more likely to find that you can ride safely in the future.

So, which are some of the most important moped laws UK riders need to listen to?

What do I need to start riding?

Before you can hop onto the seat of one of our mopeds, you need to make sure that you can pass a few tests. To do that, you have to be at least the age of sixteen. Once you are the age of sixteen, you can apply for your provisional driving license.

You can do this online, and it really does not take very long to fill out at all. This will mean that you can get on the roads quickly and easily, and it will mean you have the access to other licenses. Without at least a provisional driving license, you cannot legally ride on the roads of the UK. So, keep that in mind when you are choosing.

Getting your Compulsory Basic Training (CBT)

Next up is your CBT. This is the most important test that you can take as a rider. This is essential for rider learning, and you have to take your CBT. The only time you don’t need a CBT is if you passed your full driving test prior to the 1st February 2001. Even if you did do this, you would only be permitted to ride a 50cc scooter. You would need to sit your CBT if you wished to go any higher.

At any rate, the CBT is essential part of moped learning and riding. You need to get your CBT if you wish to learn the basics. Before you go any further, then, we recommend booking in with a local CBT test centre to make sure you can handle the basics.

CBT limitations

Please note that while your CBT is valid for two years and can be renewed indefinitely, it does have limits. Anyone who chooses to drive a moped with a CBT and a provisional alone will be limited to:

  • A maximum top speed of 28mph, regardless of your engine size (max 125cc).
  • A maximum number of people of onboard as one: you cannot have a passenger.
  • Keeping your L plates on at all times; these cannot be removed until you pass your full test.
  • Avoiding motorways; 50ccs are not allowed regardless, 125ccs are allowed with a full license.

So, if you want to make sure that you can ride to the right kind of moped laws UK riders follow, keep this in mind. Breaking any of these laws when riding on your CBT license alone could see your license revoked, so make sure you follow these rules very closely indeed.

You need a full license for motorways

Next up, please note that if you wish to ride on the motorways you need two things. One, you need to have a full UK driving license for your motorbike. You also need to have at least a 125cc moped engine. A smaller engine, like a 50cc, is not permitted on the motorway regardless of what license you happen to hold. To get a full UK license, then you need to prove the following:

  • You are a UK resident of either England, Scotland,or Wales; Northern Ireland is unique.
  • You must be the minimum age, which is at least the age of sixteen (for your AM license).
  • You must hold a valid form of ID, such as your passport.
  • You will need to complete an eyesight examination to show you can read numberplates.
  • You must have a National Insurance Number (if known).
  • You must also include your addresses for the last three days.

This would allow you to apply for your driving license. So long as you have this information and you can pass the tests associated, you should be able to get your full license from the DVLA.

Learning from your instructor

There are many moped laws that you must follow when you are on the roads of the UK. Even if you are previously experienced car driver, riding a moped is totally different. Therefore, we recommend that you take in every piece of information given to you during your CBT and full driving tests.

This will ensure that you can build up the courage and learn how to ride a bike properly. It’s going to go a long way to making sure you can improve your riding habits, also. Make sure that if you wish to fully understand the moped laws UK riders comply with that you listen to your instructor. This will help you to ride one of our scooters at Direct Bikes with total confidence and comfort!

Ready to start riding?

Once you can say that you grasp all of the above moped laws in the UK, you are ready to start riding. To do that, you first want to make sure you have the correct moped license. Once you can verify your license is A-OK, then you should get a ride ordered. Buying through our store has never been so simple. All that you need to do is choose your ideal moped, and then order it from our store. You can order online, and we will deliver it right to your doorstep.

This is the ideal way to make sure that you can start riding quickly and easily. It’s going to help you buy a moped that you know you can handle, and that you can legally ride. If you do this, then you will be much more likely to get a scooter to ride that you like. Need more help? Let us know.

Whether it’s help with choosing a moped or help with understanding UK moped laws, we’ll be happy to help.
