There’s a common myth that 50cc mopeds are just for 16-year-olds starting out on the road.
While they’re certainly popular with new riders, a 50cc is also a great option for anyone looking for an affordable and fuel-efficient way to get around. A 50cc scooter is not just easy on the wallet when you buy one—they also come with lower road tax, cheap insurance, and excellent fuel savings.
For younger riders, the big bonus is that 16-year-olds can legally ride a 50cc moped after completing some quick training. The compulsory basic training (CBT) only takes about a day and covers all the essentials, like road safety and handling skills.
Once you’ve completed your CBT, you’re good to go for two years on your moped—plenty of time to build confidence on the road before deciding if you want to move on to a larger motorcycle.

A 50cc moped typically has a top speed of around 30mph. However, this can vary depending on factors such as weight, road conditions, and maintenance. Also, note that 50cc mopeds are not designed for high-speed riding and should be used as a mode of transportation for short urban commutes.
In the UK, you'll need at least a Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) certificate to ride a 50cc moped. You must be 16 or older and have either a provisional or full driving licence. With a CBT, you can hit the road with L plates and start your journey!
In the UK, riding a 50cc moped on public roads without a Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) certificate is prohibited unless specific criteria are met. Individuals who passed their driving test before 1 February 2001 are permitted to ride a without L plates and without completing a CBT. Similarly, those holding a full motorcycle licence are also exempt from additional training. However, for all other riders, completing a CBT is a mandatory requirement to legally operate a 50cc moped on public roads.
The rules for riding a 50cc scooter depend on your licence and training. If you hold a full car licence and passed your test before 1 February 2001, you can ride a 50cc moped without needing Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) or displaying 'L' plates.
If you passed your car test on or after 1 February 2001, you’ll need to complete a CBT to gain moped entitlement. After completing the CBT, you can ride without 'L' plates.
For those with a provisional licence, completing a CBT allows you to ride a 50cc moped, but 'L' plates must be displayed until you pass the full 50cc moped test.
If you’re preparing for your moped test and already hold a full car licence with 50cc scooter entitlement, you can remove the 'L' plates. However, provisional licence holders must keep them on during the test. Make sure to complete the course, ride safely, and best of luck!
