Buy a Moped
At Direct Bikes, we help many parents pick up a moped scooter for their children who are reaching adulthood. Getting your children used to riding from a young age is a brilliant learning experience for them. That’s why our bikes are so affordable; you can get your kids out there on the roads as soon as possible with our help!
As a parent, the idea of letting your kids on the roads is much easier if you know you’ve bought a quality vehicle. Once they hit the age of 16, they are legally entitled to learn how to drive. Anyone who is aged 16 or above has the right to apply for their provisional driving license. Once your child has that, they could push forward and buy a moped from Direct Bikes.
As the parent, it does come down to you to help your child make a good decision. And given you will likely need to help them pay for their scooter, you should be happy with what they are buying!
The question, though, is should you let them ride a moped?
Let us show you why letting your child enjoy the experience of heading out on their own can be one of the best decisions that you make this year. Buying a moped from Direct Bikes is smart, simple, easy, and affordable. We can even help your young driver make sure they can get the right kind of protection, cover, and insurance!
What is a moped?
Before we go any further, it’s important to note that moped and scooter are often interchangeable terms. However, to be specific about it you will find that a moped is a vehicle capable of speeds of around 28mph. While Direct Bikes 50cc mopeds can reach around 30mph, they tend to range (for those aged 16) to around 15-28mph.
They are often a form of vehicle that is not bound by unladen weight. The maximum engine that a moped can have is a 50cc. However, it is common to hear people say that they have a 125cc moped, too. While it can be confusing and it can sound odd, you can buy a moped with an engine exceeding 125cc. Typically, anything above 50cc is likely to be termed a scooter, not a moped.
For a 16-17 year old though, going at 50cc is likely to be more than enough. We sell many quality, beginner-friendly mopeds that your child could easily learn how to ride on today.
Getting your 16 year old on the road
Now that you know what a moped is, it’s important to know that you need to get your child the right kind of driving license. In the past, we had what is known as a Category P. Cat P would have allowed you to drive a vehicle with an engine of 50cc and a speed of up to 50km/h.
However, today we also have access to Category AM and Category Q. Older drivers might find that confusing. For a 16-year-old, though, this just means that a Category AM makes a huge difference. It gives you the entitlement to ride a moped with speeds as high as 45km/h. you could even ride a light quadricycle or a small three wheeler that has an engine capacity of 50cc.
Category Q, though, would mean that you can also drive two or three-wheel moped bikes with a maximum speed of around 25km/h. To actually make sure your kid can legally go on the road, you need to make sure that you have the following things in order:
1. They must already be 16
Buying them it for their 16th is fine; giving them it even a day before to try out is not. The 16-year-old cut-off is not something that you can ignore or flaunt. There is no mitigation here; if you are caught driving before the age of 16, you will likely wind up in a fair amount of trouble.
2. They must have their Compulsory Basic Training
Otherwise known as your CBT, this is a light training program that you can often complete in a single day. You will be given the chance to learn both theory and practical examinations for the motorcycle category you are going for. In the case of a 16-year-old, that will be a 50cc model for the most part.
They also have to pass both theory and practical tests. If they cannot, they’ll have to sit their CBT again until they have both. This is something that you need to go through; driving without having completed your CBT is not a good idea whatsoever.
Once you have passed the examination, you will have your CBT noted on your license on a Category AM or Category Q section. This will give you an opportunity to give you the chance to ride your moped as a 16-year-old.However, your child will be limited to some very particular means of driving.
What can a 16 year old do when they buy a moped?
So, first off, you can do just about anything that a normal driver can. However, you MUST agree to the following:
- You must not enter a motorway – you are not allowed to drive on the motorway for any reason until you have your full driving license. Do not flaunt or break this rule.
- You must not have a passenger on the moped with you. It is only legally allowed for you to carry a passenger on the back of your bike if you have your full driving license.
- You must always keep your L plates on. With a CBT, you are still a learner for you have not sat and passed your final test. Don’t presume CBT means you can drive fully!
With the above information, you should be much more likely to understand how a 16-year-old is allowed to drive. You are also limited to 28mph in speed.
