How fast is a 50cc moped?

Additionally, for our 125cc engine size version, there is a small price shift. With a larger engine comes an (only slightly) higher starting price of £1699 for a brand-new model. With high-quality performance, top speeds of 60mph and fuel efficiency, it’s a great deal for a new ride. Do I need a license to drive a moped?

Yes, you will need a licence to drive a moped. For a 50cc Moped you can use a provisional licence as long as you are aged 16+, completed a CBT test, display L plates and have insurance. If you want to ride a moped with a 125cc engine you will need to be aged 17+, passed a CBT, test, L plates and have insurance. You must make sure you have the correct moped for sale.

How fast is a 50cc moped?

Most 50cc mopeds, like the ones in our store, have a capped engine, which limits the top speed to 30mph. However, some 50cc mopeds can comfortably reach speeds of 40mph to 60mph. A capped speed of 30mph might not sound fast, it’s good for going around the town or a way of building confidence if you’re a first-time rider. A lower top speed will help you get used to the roads while still learning.

Are mopeds street legal?

All our mopeds are street legal. If you hold the correct licence, training certification and, at least third-party only, insurance, you can legally ride all our mopeds on roads across the UK. By law, you must be at least 16-years-old to ride a moped.

Our mopeds with a 125cc engine are legal to ride on the motorway but you’re required to have the full UK driving licence and completed the Compulsory Basic Training (CBT). If you’re riding a moped or scooter on the motorway, it’s important you feel safe and confident doing so before making the venture. With our 125cc engines capped at 60mph, they’re a great starting speed for faster roads and motorways.

50cc engine mopeds cannot be driven on A-roads or motorways. The speed on our 50cc mopeds is capped at 30mph and can’t reach the speeds to travel safely on faster roads. 

What is the difference between a scooter and a moped?

The main difference between mopeds and scooters is the engine size. Mopeds tend to be small size 50cc or less with top speeds of 30mph (although some 50cc can reach 60mph). Scooters range between 50cc to 125cc and usually have a top speed of 60mph. Scooters are typically more expensive than mopeds due to their size and speed.

Do you have to have insurance on a moped?

By law, you need insurance to ride a moped and scooter. To legally ride a moped for sale or scooter for sale in the UK, you’re required to have at minimum third-party only insurance, hold a full or provisional driving licence and be at least 16-years-old.

Before going on the road, scooters must be insured and taxed as without this you could face fines of £300 or more, six penalty points on your licence, and even a criminal conviction. Your moped or scooter could even be taken away.

However, mopeds and scooters only need to be insured if they’re used on the road. You must apply for a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN) which requires you to declare if the vehicle is not on the roads. If you don’t apply, you will be fined a minimum fixed penalty of £100 or up to £1,000 if you end up going to court.
